VHS Schwerin | Program 2026 & Courses

The VHS Schwerin, officially Volkshochschule “Ehm Welk”, is much more than a classic course location. The institution is the municipal adult education center of the state capital Schwerin, it sees itself as a state-recognized educational institution and is aimed at education enthusiasts from Schwerin and the surrounding area. According to the city, around 4,000 participants attend the courses and seminars of the VHS each year; the offerings range from society and languages to culture, profession and basic education, as well as health, observatory, travel, and active aging. Therefore, those looking for the program 2026 will not find a narrow specialty page, but a real educational cosmos with many access points, counseling options, and several course locations. Particularly interesting is that the current website already visibly depicts spring 2026, showing how lively and continuously updated the program is. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/politik-verwaltung/stadtverwaltung/verwaltungsstruktur/verwaltungsstellen/Landeshauptstadt-Schwerin-Volkshochschule-Ehm-Welk/))

For local searches, the VHS Schwerin is also strong because the most important concerns are directly connected: program, courses, language placement, school qualifications, basic education, senior offers, and the concrete question of location, registration, and accessibility. The homepage showcases current course highlights and upcoming offerings, including Pilates, German as a second language, English C1, cooking courses, yoga, and lectures. In everyday life, the VHS is not just a place for individual semester offerings, but a reliable point of contact for very different educational paths. This mix of a wide range of courses, personal counseling, and municipal anchoring makes the institution highly relevant for search queries like vhs schwerin program 2026, vhs schwerin courses, and vhs schwerin languages. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/index.php))

Current Program 2026, Courses and Booking

The current program 2026 of the VHS Schwerin is clearly organized by topics and easily accessible on the website. The website lists the central areas of society, languages, culture, health, profession / IT, basic education, school qualifications, travel, and active aging. This creates a program that is intended for both everyday life and professional development, personal interests, and social participation. Already on the homepage, specific courses with start dates and locations are shown, such as Pilates-Fit for men, German as a second language B1 intensive course, English C1, baking rolls, Hatha yoga, urban sketching, and a day workshop on grandchildren of war. This is a strong signal for everyone searching online for vhs schwerin program 2026, vhs schwerin courses, or vhs schwerin program, who expect not just general information but real current content. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/index.php))

Those who want to orient themselves initially can not only read the program booklet online but also pick it up at several locations in Schwerin. According to the city, the booklet is available at the registration center KON/vhs at Puschkinstraße 13, in the town hall, in the library, and in the Schwerin information center. The website complements this analog offering with a course finder and the online structure of the individual subject areas. This is practical for people who want to browse first and then book specifically. It is also particularly helpful that the VHS does not only present course offerings as a rigid list but links them with current examples: there are courses in the cooking studio, health room, language course rooms, and auditorium. This transforms the pure program booklet into a vivid picture of educational work on site, where one quickly understands which formats are actually relevant in spring and throughout the year. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/news/herbstsemester-vhs/))

The breadth of target groups is also remarkable. The website addresses not only beginners but also advanced learners, seniors, people interested in culture and communication, as well as individuals looking to reorient themselves professionally. The homepage shows, for example, language courses at several levels, movement courses, health offerings, and lectures. This mix is typical for a community college: low-threshold, but not arbitrary; open, but structured; local, but modern. So, if you are looking for vhs schwerin courses or vhs schwerin program 2026, you will find here not just dates but a whole learning system with thematic depth and regularly changing focuses. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/index.php))

Learning Languages: English, Spanish, and Placement Tests

The language area is one of the most visible strengths of the VHS Schwerin. The official language page lists a wide range of offerings including English, French, Chinese, Danish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Spanish, Hebrew, German as a second language, BAMF integration courses, and themed evenings. Additionally, there are qualified course leaders, methodologically varied teaching, and the use of modern media. This makes the VHS particularly interesting for search queries like vhs schwerin english and vhs schwerin spanish, as it is not just about individual vocabulary courses, but about a tiered, everyday learning offer at different levels. The current program list on the website also displays specific courses for A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1, such as English A1 without prior knowledge, English A2, English B1/B2 Conversation Plus, English C1 Advanced course, French, Chinese, and Danish for vacation. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/sprachen))

Particularly important for many interested parties is the placement test. The VHS Schwerin offers recognized language placement tests that can be conducted online at home or in the cultural information center. This is a sensible entry point if one already has prior knowledge but is not sure at which course level to start. The website explicitly describes this path as a quick and secure way to assess language proficiency and receive a corresponding course recommendation. Additionally, integration courses from BAMF and German as a second language offerings currently running at several locations appear on the homepage. For the search for vhs schwerin citizenship test, this is relevant insofar as the VHS at least provides the linguistic and integration-related foundation on which many people build their next steps towards everyday language, orientation, and participation. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/einstufungstests-fuer-sprachen))

The language offerings do not seem theoretical but very concrete. The website features courses with real start dates and locations: such as English in the evening, English A2 conversation for seniors, German as a second language A1 to C1, literature circle for migrants, Chinese for advanced learners, French at different levels, and Hebrew. This variety shows that the VHS Schwerin not only offers classic school English courses but also creates spaces for conversation, repetition, deepening, and intercultural encounters. Therefore, those who want to learn a language will find not only instruction but a clear learning path with counseling, tests, and suitable levels. Particularly in the regional context of Schwerin, this is a strong argument for all those searching for vhs schwerin languages, vhs schwerin english, or vhs schwerin spanish who value real course quality. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/sprachen))

School Qualifications and Basic Education at VHS Schwerin

A particularly important area of the VHS Schwerin is school qualifications and basic education. The official subpage on school qualifications describes the offerings as a second chance for the desired school qualification and mentions the possibility of obtaining vocational qualifications or the intermediate school certificate. According to the city, these educational paths are currently free of charge as part of the funding from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the state capital Schwerin. This is relevant not only for adolescents and young adults but for everyone who wants to develop professionally or personally. The VHS website currently lists specific courses for the intermediate school certificate and vocational qualifications with start dates in late summer 2026, specifically at the CAT VHS location. Thus, the search term vhs schwerin school qualifications becomes a real, tangible educational offer with a clear perspective. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/schulabschluesse))

The basic education complements this area sensibly. Under the title “You can do it!”, the VHS explains that there are courses for people who want to learn to read and write from the beginning or improve existing skills. The content is tailored to the individual learning level, participants work at their own pace and without performance pressure, and personal counseling is recommended before starting. This formulation is important for many people because basic education is often associated with shame, insecurity, or long learning biographies. The VHS Schwerin explicitly focuses on support rather than evaluation here. The page also shows reading and writing courses for adults, with course locations in the Schelfschule and in the CAT VHS. This makes the institution interesting for search queries like vhs schwerin basic education or vhs schwerin courses when people are not looking for leisure courses but for stable learning success. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/grundbildung))

Additionally, the social framework is important. The city describes the VHS as a place of education for adults and emphasizes that its offerings are aimed at all education enthusiasts in Schwerin and the surrounding area, especially at groups with special educational needs. This includes young adults who want to obtain their school diploma free of charge through a second educational path. This combination of free qualification, individual counseling, and municipal responsibility is a real locational advantage. So, if you are looking for a second chance in Schwerin, an alternative to the classic school path, or low-threshold learning support, you will find at the VHS not a marginal solution but a central institution with a clear mission. This makes the areas of school qualifications and basic education one of the strongest themes for the entire site. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/politik-verwaltung/stadtverwaltung/verwaltungsstruktur/verwaltungsstellen/Landeshauptstadt-Schwerin-Volkshochschule-Ehm-Welk/))

Active in Old Age: Senior Courses, Technology, and Community

The area of Active in Old Age shows very well how broadly the VHS Schwerin thinks. The current subpage states that 14 senior groups invite participation, and 10 events take place each semester. The goal is to challenge the brain, maintain curiosity, and enable learning with like-minded individuals at an appropriate level. At the same time, participants are made fit in dealing with new technology such as smartphones and tablets. This fits excellently with a modern community college that not only imparts knowledge but also strengthens independence and participation. For search queries like vhs schwerin active in old age, this is particularly relevant because the term does not remain abstract but describes a concrete, recurring offering format. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/aktiv-im-alter))

The municipal classification also underscores the importance of this thematic area. The city names the community college as a place of lifelong learning and emphasizes that the offerings reach around 4,000 participants per year. This includes not only language and specialized courses but also senior groups and educational trips. This is important because older people at the VHS Schwerin are not pushed to the margins but have a firm place in the overall program. Courses such as English A2 conversation for seniors or various senior groups focused on encounters, movement, mental activity, and practical life assistance fit into this. The VHS thus becomes a meeting point where learning and social contacts come together without losing the educational claim. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/politik-verwaltung/stadtverwaltung/verwaltungsstruktur/verwaltungsstellen/Landeshauptstadt-Schwerin-Volkshochschule-Ehm-Welk/))

Content-wise, this area is valuable because it addresses exactly where life reality takes place: in everyday life with digital devices, in the desire for movement, in interest in culture, and in the need for exchange. The website makes it clear that senior offerings are not treated as a special case but as an integral part of the semester program. So, if you are looking for vhs schwerin courses or vhs schwerin program 2026 and are also interested in senior courses, you will find a clear answer here: Yes, the VHS Schwerin offers its own continuous area for older adults, which is very visible in the current program logic. This provides orientation and shows that education in Schwerin is not limited to a specific age. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/unser-kursangebot/aktiv-im-alter))

Course Locations, Registration, and Opening Hours in Schwerin

The VHS Schwerin is present at several course locations, and this makes it very flexible in everyday life. The official overview of course locations names the Brandenstein Palace at Puschkinstraße 13, the Schelfschule at Puschkinstraße 13, the CAT VHS at Hamburger Allee 124, and the observatory/planetarium at Weinbergstraße 17. On the city's monument list, the address Puschkinstraße 13 is listed as the former Brandenstein Palace and the former Schelfschule. This makes it clear that this location is not just an office but a historically and urbanistically interesting educational site. For users, this is practical because registration, counseling, and many courses are directly connected to a central downtown location. Those searching for vhs schwerin hamburger allee or vhs schwerin campus am turm will also see immediately that the VHS is present not only in the old town but also in the CAT. ([vhs-schwerin.de](https://www.vhs-schwerin.de/ueber-uns/uebersicht-der-kursorte))

Registration takes place at the registration center KON/vhs at Puschkinstraße 13. There are clear opening hours: Monday to Wednesday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00, Thursday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00, and closed on Fridays. The service information also provides the phone number 0385 59127-19 or -20 and the email address info-vhs@schwerin.de. The municipal administrative page also confirms the address, contact methods, and office hours. This structure is particularly helpful for people who need advice on-site, as they do not have to search long but immediately know when and where they can reach someone. This is a clear advantage for everyone interested not only in a course but in the entire process from counseling to registration. ([serviceportal.schwerin.de](https://serviceportal.schwerin.de/dienstleistungen/-/egov-bis-detail/einrichtung/2291/show))

For access, it is important to know that Puschkinstraße is marked as a traffic-calmed area between Markt and Friedrichstraße. The city explains that pedestrians have priority there and vehicles may only drive at walking pace. Additionally, the parking fee regulation shows that the city center is classified as parking fee zone 1, with 2.50 euros per hour, day tickets for 10 euros, and the possibility of free short-term parking for up to 30 minutes. This means in practice: those driving to VHS Schwerin should plan some buffer time, especially during peak hours, and think about downtown parking early. For visitors, this is not a hurdle but a realistic note on the situation in a densely used, historically shaped city center. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/news/bereich-zwischen-markt-und-friedrichstrasse-verkehrsberuhigt/?utm_source=openai))

Since the VHS works at several locations, it is also worthwhile to look at the professional distribution. Language courses, basic education, school qualifications, health offerings, and many current formats take place in the Schelfschule or in the CAT VHS. The current program shows, for example, English C1, German as a second language, cooking courses, movement offerings, and educational paths for vocational qualifications and the intermediate school certificate. The location is therefore less a single building than a network of learning places. For the search intention vhs schwerin program 2026, this is ideal because users not only find a date but also immediately see at which location the course takes place and what routes they need to plan for it. First of all, I want to say that my teacher was adequate, personable and professional. I have no issue with teaching staff. I do however have issue with the front office conduct and the way they represent their fees and billing. First of all, what they say they will charge is actually sliding scale that increases. For example, if the class is for 10 people @ 75 € each and only 5 people come to class you actually will be charged 150€. Additionally, you are never informed of this until you are in class. No where on the class schedule class pages does it state this. Also, during the registration process it is also not said. One would think it would be IN BIG BOLD LETTERS up front and apart of every step, especially in the registration process when you input your personal information and banking details. YOUR FEE MAY INCREASE DEPENDANT ON ATTENDANCE! Right? That would make sense. Instead, they do tell you this BUT it's waaaay in the back of the catalog in teeny tiny little letters that you need a magnifying glass to see and it's after all this other stuff that you wouldn't even sniff at like Corona regulations and stuff. I'm telling you, you'd probably fall asleep by the time you found it. Which you won't because you really have to search for it. Another issue is, on the first day of class, (if it's not filled to maximum capacity) an office person will come in and tell you that you may have to pay more but you should just wait and see if anyone shows up because you might pay less. Then this person has everyone sign an attendance sheet in order to charge you for the one day if you decide not to continue with the class due to it being beyond your means. Then they come in and out several times to talk about how they're going to charge more and ask if that is ok with you (it's not). Seriously, the first day personal took 10 or more minutes from the class. The second day five. The fourth day 15 minutes of Blah Blah Blah about how we will be charged. During our learning time which we are paying for. My story is, tomorrow is my fifth day and there eventually was a few more who came in a couple days, yesterday and today and we ended up with 8 folks. So our tuition fee was charged up from 75 to (I think) 89.50€. Not a big increase but why couldn't they have mentioned all of this from the beginning? AND stay out of our learning environment when we are in class to learn. Also, I have been stressing out about this every time this person came in the class and could not concentrate properly like I normally would. It's all just really annoying.. and shady. Ok, I wasn't even going to say this BUT this morning, about a half an hour before class I got an email from the staff person which stated again that I would be charged more and if I didn't agree, I could not show up and they would just charge me for the days I had attended. Later, in class this very person came in and had everyone sign a paper saying they agreed to the increase. I didn't want to sign and I'll admit I was annoyed but I was polite and said I wanted to review the document as it is not in my Mother tongue. And she tried to again say about the increase and petitioned a signature again. I declined and mentioned that she shouldn't be bothering us in class with these formalities as this was our time to learn. I was asked to speak outside and told that I had to either leave the property or sign. I said I'm not leaving I'm here to learn. This individual then informed me that if I didn't leave they were going to call the Police! I said "What? You go ahead then! Call them!" And this person left. After a distraught conversation with a family member I reentered the class and continued with my lesson. The Police never came. I'm going to pay. I always was. I just wasn't happy about the bait and switch practices presented. I'm a nice sensible person but this is ridiculous. And this experience didn't happen because I'm a foreigner and didn't understand.

I attended a performance of "Luise" in the auditorium of the Schelfschule school. The Fritz Reuter Stage presented the play in honor of the poet Fritz Reuter. It was a wonderful performance, focusing on the role of Fritz Reuter's wife.

A very good facility. The teachers are very friendly. The range of courses is very diverse. There's a lot on offer, especially for young people. There are also some great health-related courses. The location at Schelfmarkt is excellent. You can get there by bus lines 10 or 11. Finding a parking space is often difficult.
